Drawing from a rich, educated, and well-rounded experiential background, Sabrina DeJoannis aims to infuse her energy and vision of community-backed education into the Waltham School Committee.
She brings an innovative, methodical, data-driven approach to the committee, shaped by her education and professional experiences in engineering and finance. Having migrated from Bangladesh in her youth to pursue better education, she also emphasizes the importance of compassion when addressing the needs of a changing population.
Sabrina highlights the strengths of Waltham’s public schools, including their athletics and fine arts programs, and points to the robust culture that supports them. Students who engage in these programs take immense pride in their school and the larger community. She advocates for a community-based approach to education that encourages collaboration among parents, teachers, administrators, and the community at large.
As our K-12 student body evolves and the job market shifts, Sabrina DeJoannis is eager to contribute meaningfully to the public school system. As a dedicated mother of two elementary school children and an experienced leader skilled in managing change, improving processes, and ensuring continuity, she is poised to offer a fresh perspective to the Waltham School Committee.
She champions universal pre-K, high expectations, and accountability for all stakeholders, fostering a culture of belonging. Sabrina believes in leveraging relevant community experience, collaborating with families, and maintaining continuity in leadership and curriculum.
My name is Sabrina DeJoannis, and I am excited to be running for the Waltham School Committee. I would like to take a few minutes to introduce myself. The Waltham School Committee plays a crucial role in fostering community-backed education and shaping the future of Waltham’s children, and it would be an honor to serve in this capacity.
Through my community engagement in Waltham education, I have learned a great deal from the wonderful stakeholders I have come to know, including teachers, administrators, and families. I am eager to combine my knowledge of the district with my professional skills to enhance Waltham schools for all students and stakeholders. I believe in universal pre-K, high expectations and accountability for everyone, and fostering a culture of belonging.
I am accessible and recognize the importance of listening to diverse viewpoints and thoughtfully considering them. I have a proven track record of building bridges and collaborating to address complex challenges. I am actively engaged in the community and strive to connect different stakeholders when it is beneficial. I welcome differing opinions from all members of our community.
I would be honored to earn your vote for the Waltham School Committee in November. I will faithfully serve in the best interest of all the children of Waltham, working in partnership with all stakeholders.
As the proud mother of two primary school girls, I have been deeply engaged in the educational community, both at the school level and district-wide. I am an active member of the Waltham Dual Language School PTO and have had the honor of serving as its president. It has been a privilege to collaborate with teachers, staff, families, and other stakeholders to raise funds for and organize enrichment events at our school, fostering a community-backed education environment.
For instance, as a new school in a temporary location, we did not have a tradition for Field Day. Prior to my involvement, Field Day activities took place on the blacktop in the corner of Alder and Beech, split by grades. I worked closely with the district and Waltham Police Department to successfully establish a Field Day tradition for our school. Thanks to the connections I have nurtured over the years, we have expanded those traditions this year in our new location. Additionally, we have organized and funded field trips that are free for all Dual Language students, including visits to the DeCordova Sculpture Park, JFK Library, Discovery Museum in Action, and the Museum of Science. Furthermore, I advocated for the creation of a School Advisory Council for DLS and encouraged parents and teachers to join as elected members.
At the district level, I have served on the Waltham School Committee's strategic planning committee. I am also part of a core group of parents working to start a new parent group, Waltham Partners for Performers and Presenters. This group aims to enhance access to fine and performing arts education and enrichment activities for all Waltham public school students. Additionally, I serve as the treasurer for the Friends of the Waltham Public Library, a non-profit organization.
Civic engagement has been a core value in my life from an early age. I vividly remember accompanying my mother to vote in 1981, just months after the assassination of Bangladesh’s sitting president. That day left a lasting imprint: the quiet reverence of the curtained booth, the ink on her thumb, and the intense conversations among adults about leadership, choice, and the future of the country. But within six months, a military coup had overthrown the government, and I spent the rest of my childhood under dictatorship. Bangladesh did not hold a free election again until after I graduated college and was living in the United States.
That experience taught me not to take democracy for granted and emphasized that one must be actively engaged and open to change. I registered to vote as soon as I was eligible here in the U.S. and have participated in every election since. I believe deeply in the responsibility to serve when one can — and to set an example. I want my daughters to grow up understanding that civic involvement matters, that change is possible, and that showing up counts. But we must also be able to listen, be open to ideas for betterment, and approach each other with respect and care.
As a parent in Waltham Public Schools for the past five years, I’ve been actively engaged — learning multiple curriculums, understanding evolving policies, and interacting with administrators, teachers, and staff. I’ve witnessed firsthand how community-backed education initiatives can make a difference, yet I've also seen how inconsistent implementation of policies can undermine our shared goals. It's hard to foster a culture of excellence and pride without clear accountability and continuity.
That’s why I’m running for the Waltham School Committee. I want to ensure that our school system delivers on its promise — with consistent, transparent policies and strong buy-in from students, staff, and families. If entrusted with your vote, I, Sabrina DeJoannis, will faithfully work to bring greater coherence, accountability, and accessibility equity across Waltham Public Schools.
I studied engineering at WPI and then worked for many years in the controls and power industry. I also furthered my education with graduate degrees in business and finance. As Sabrina DeJoannis, I have a strong track record of serving in leadership roles in non-profit boards and industry organizations, along with professional experience in managing change, optimizing processes, and building continuity, all of which contribute to my commitment to community-backed education and initiatives like the Waltham School Committee.
